CAPITAL AND CLIMATE CHANGE: A TALK AND DISCUSSION WITH PAUL MESSERSMITH-GLAVIN
NOVEMBER 29 7PM INDIANA UNIVERSITY
WOODBURN HALL 008
These words have been generating quite the buzz recently, and people are beginning to realize how important it is that we fight back against global climate change. What many people have not been mentioning however is the integral connection climate change has with capitalism. On November 29, Paul Messersmith-Glavin will deliver a talk called “Capital and Climate Change,” examining how capitalism is responsible for the climate crisis, what capitalists may or may not do about it, and advocating for what everyday people can do to solve the crisis. There will also be a discussion on the topic following the lecture.
Paul is a member of the Parasol Climate Collective, which is organizing against coal exports in the Pacific Northwest, and a member of Hella 503 Collective, which grew out of Occupy. He has been a board member of the Institute for Anarchist Studies since its founding in 1996, and is a part of the editorial collective of its journal, Perspectives on Anarchist Theory. He was a founding member of the Youth Greens, and was a member of the Love and Rage Revolutionary Anarchist Federation. He edited and wrote the Foreword to Imperiled Life: Revolution Against Climate Catastrophe (AK Press/Institute for Anarchist Studies, 2012) and “Between Social Ecology and Deep Ecology: Gary Snyder’s Ecological Philosophy,” in The Philosophy of the Beats (University Press of Kentucky, 2012).
